HAENGEGLEITER

GLIDER 12, Didier Favre HANGGLIDER MUSEUM: THE FIRST PARAPENTE (1973) At the announcement of the competition "March or Fly" and at other occasions I always thought and insisted that the first parapente was the brain-child of Laurent de Kalbermatten. What a surprise when Andrea Kuhn came from the Engadin, Switzerland, not only to take part at the competition "March or Fly", but also to present to the museum the first parapente of the world: the Skywing from 1973 (you are right: the year 1973!). Upon verification we found out that the material used was in deed consistent with that used in spinnakers (a Bainbridge acquired from NASA) and that the form resembles today's parapentes. Andrea was accompanied by his master and friend Dieter Strasilla, who conducted his first great parapente flights in the early Seventies. Hard to believe, but true! Thus, both of them as well as his brother Udo are the creators of the parapente. Laurent de Kalbermatten merely commercialized the parapente. The museum is credited for revealing the true origin. The material is kept not only as reminder, but is preserved and protected. The museum is deeply grateful to Andrea and Dieter for this gift.

The spinnaker cloth, once carefully surface-treated, was worn out so much that it was completely soft | |||
